EXPERIENCE SAKE FROM TOKYO'S OLDEST BREWERY: OVER 300 YEARS OF HISTORY AMIDST NATURE
Sawanoi is in Ome City, which is the fifth largest city in Tokyo.

Established In 1702, Currently Led By The 23rd Generation Owner
Ome City is situated in the upper reaches of the Tama River and is known for its rich natural environment within Tokyo. Two-thirds of the city area is covered by forests, making it a city characterized by its abundant greenery. You’ll find this hidden gem not far from the city of Tokyo. Visitors are welcomed not only to taste and purchase exceptional sake but also to enjoy the gorgeous greenery.

The nearest train station IS called Sawai Station
It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes by train from Shinjuku Station to reach the lush, green nature.
Since Sawai Station is an unmanned station, automatic ticket gates compatible with IC cards are installed. It is rare to find an unmanned station in Tokyo, and its tranquility is part of its charm. The surrounding area offers beautiful scenery that provides a sense of peace to visitors.

At Sawanoi, you can enjoy a variety of activities amidst the abundant natural surroundings, including sake brewery tours, dining, and a visiting an art museum.

In the shops within the premises, you can find "freshly brewed sake tanks sold by weight", "handmade manju," and dishes that pair perfectly with sake.
The staff at the shop will carefully explain each type of sake, allowing you to gain a lot of knowledge about Japanese sake. With a wide selection of renowned sake, you can find the perfect souvenir that will delight your friends and family!
Seiryu Garden Sawanoien
In 1967, Ozawa Brewery Co., Ltd. opened Seiryu Garden Sawanoien with the hope that visitors would enjoy sake brewery tours and local sake while experiencing the natural beauty of the Mitake Gorge. The brand name "Sawanoi'' comes from the former name of this area, Sawai Village. Although it is in Tokyo, the area is rich in greenery and closely connected to water. Visitors can savor sake made from water drawn from a depth of 140 meters.
A garden with a breathtaking location spread along the banks of the Tama River
It is a garden highly praised as a relaxing spot for nature exploration and hiking in the rich natural environment of the Mitake Gorge.
You can enjoy sake and soba while listening to the sound of the river. It is the perfect place to relax in between your explorations.

What craftsmen always do before starting sake brewing
They perform a ritual at the shrine located at the entrance of the brewery, which involves two bows, two claps, and one more bow. This is because sake was originally offered to the gods, and sake brewing itself was considered a sacred ritual. This ritual is performed each morning to acknowledge the privilege of being able to engage in such a revered craft.
The long history and traditions are carefully preserved, and the spirit of these traditions is still alive today. Visitors can feel this sacred atmosphere and experience the depth of sake brewing.
Founded in 1702, “Ozawa Brewery” has a history spanning over 300 years
It is the oldest brewery among the nine breweries in Tokyo and produces about 20 types of sake. At Ozawa Brewery, you can also take a tour of the sake brewery.
During the sake brewery tour, you can learn about the process of making Sawanoi sake and hear stories about the brewery. By understanding the thoughts and efforts of the craftsmen, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the sake, enriching your experience and enjoyment.
Additionally, one of the brewing methods used is called "Kimoto" making.
This is an Edo-period method that takes time and effort, utilizing the power of natural bacteria.
While it has evolved and changed over time, there is an absolute and timeless essence at its core. The staff says that this method has been passed down since the Edo period. The staff’s insights and anecdotes made the visit truly memorable, providing a comprehensive understanding of this traditional brewing methods. I could feel the passion and history infused into every aspect of the establishment. From the moment I stepped in, it was evident that the artisans were deeply dedicated to their craft.

Kikizake Dokoro (Sake Tasting Room)
At the Kikizake Dokoro, you can enjoy ten different types of sake, from a sake cup.
The classic Sawanoi sake is a beloved staple, known for its sharp and dry flavor.
Additionally, I found that the very dry Junmai sake pairs well with salty dishes, tsukudani (food boiled in soy sauce) or marinated tuna.
CAFE Shizuku
CAFE Shizuku is a cafe that offers freshly brewed coffee and sweets made with Sawanoi's brewing water, and it also provides takeout services.
From inside the cafe, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Mitake Gorge, creating a serene and luxurious atmosphere.
Mamagotoya
Mamagotoya is a traditional Japanese restaurant that specializes in kaiseki cuisine, featuring tofu and yuba dishes made daily from carefully selected domestic soybeans.
The dishes, crafted with care and attention, are each unique and special. The exterior also exudes a calm, traditional Japanese atmosphere, allowing visitors to enjoy a relaxed and leisurely time.
The suspension bridge "Kaede Bridge" over the Tama River
You can see people enjoying canoeing and boating on the Tama River. In the summer, it is even possible to go swimming.
The view of the river from the bridge is breathtaking and makes you forget the passage of time. I enjoy canoeing myself and have visited several times. I think it is the perfect place to escape from a busy everyday life.

Have you ever rung the bell?
At the base of the suspension bridge, there is a bell that you can ring freely. The lingering sound of the bell, combined with the chirping of birds, creates a sacred atmosphere.

Sawanoi
I really love this area and often visit to go hiking. It is a place I regularly return to for its beautiful trails.
Make sure to experience the "ultimate moments" amidst the great nature of Tokyo!
