SHOWA KINEN PARK(Autumn)

Showa Kinen Park is a large national park covering 180 hectares (about 39 times the size of Tokyo Dome)

It is a relaxing spot where people can enjoy playgrounds for kids,

flower fields, cycling, and boating in nature.

THE AUTUMN LIGHT-UP

The park hosts a light-up autumn event highlighting the beautiful yellow and red leaves.

This year was the 5th event and includes an illuminated ginkgo tree avenue, a Japanese
garden, and the Bonsai garden (which was open at night for its 20th anniversary and
featured stunning lit-up bonsai displays).

A Quick and Easy Trip from Shinjuku to Nature

The park is just 30 minutes from Shinjuku Station, making it easy to visit. It is a great place to relax in the beautiful surroundings. When you enter through the Tachikawa Entrance, you will see ginkgo trees lining both sides of the long waterway, which feels like the gardens at Versailles. Behind it, you’ll find an even larger green space. It is perfect for picnics in spring and summer and for enjoying the autumn leaves in fall.

Japanese Garden

This beautiful garden was made to celebrate the wedding of the Emperor and Empress.

In autumn, you can walk around the pond and see about 300 colorful maple trees and

snow suspensions on the pine trees.

In autumn, the garden lights up at night, making the bridges and buildings shine and

reflect on the water like mirrors. There are also traditional Japanese-themed decorations, like a path with 400 wind chimes and another with over 280 colorful umbrellas.

It takes about 40 minutes to get to the Japanese garden from the Tachikawa Entrance, but the beautiful and different scenery makes it feel much shorter. In the afternoon, we visited the Japanese garden to see the autumn leaves, and the view was stunning. The atmosphere changed completely at night, and the red and yellow leaves, brightly lit against the dark night, felt magical. There were also great photo spots and fun displays.

The First National Bonsai Garden in Japan

This year, special lights made the bonsai trees look even more beautiful at night. Even

when the light-up event ends, you can see 61 pots of historical and traditional bonsai

trees and seasonal bonsai display all year round.

Each bonsai tree was beautiful in its own unique way. It was amazing to see so many different types displayed in the same place.

Ginkgo Tree Avenue for Connection

The ginkgo tree avenue has 98 trees lined up over 300 meters. You can enjoy the

golden leaves and the beautiful straight path.

Walking the Ginkgo Tree Avenue felt like being in a dream. It is the perfect spot for memorable photos. The lighting and music effects at night transform the avenue into a magical scene, like a Christmas market. I recommend taking a break at the barbecue area in the middle of the avenue to enjoy grilled marshmallows and hot wine.

Comment from the reporter!

When we arrived at the Japanese garden, we found a temporary stand selling dango, a traditional Japanese rice dumpling snack, for a limited time. If it's open during your visit, try some before entering the garden.
The park is also great to explore in the afternoon, with plenty of time to enjoy it.
You can also borrow a bicycle to see more of the park.
